Forum: GratefulDead Subject: just in -- 1st AUD for epic gd73-06-10 RFK Stadium

RFK Stadium -- Wash DC -- June 10, 1973

What a weekend. Sunday was an epic show -- 8 hours long, including breaks and the jam at the end. This has always been my favorite show. It was my 2nd time taping. The day before was my 1st time taping, for the Saturday show during the 100-degree daytime temps. The crowd for these 2 shows was between 60,000 and 100,000 people for the Dead and Allman Bros. Why is the 8-tune partial fileset Gadsden-Miller AUD for this show even posted on the LMA, with only 415 downloads? I guess it's the only AUD that's ever surfaced for this magical show. I'm glad it's here. It provided some perfect sources for my patches in "PITB" and "Eyes."

I could truthfully tell you that my choice of blank cassettes for this AUD has haunted me. That was 35 years ago. Why did I use crappy Memorex tapes with even crappier cassette housings? Was I impressed with their ad that featured Ella Fitzgerald belting out a note that shattered a wine glass during her tape playback? My tapes probably have a couple of thousand playback passes on them. For years they sat in my car's glove box in temps ranging from 35 below zero to 150 degrees above. One of the tapes suffered severe tape damage because the housing failed. It squealed like a pig and then it went "ka-put." I lost about 10 feet of tape too. I had to transfer the reels into a crappy surrogate housing. "It Takes A Train To Cry," and "That's Alright, Mama" were a remaster basket case. But why bother wasting your time telling you this crap? It's amazing to me how sweet this AUD still sounds. What a magical and timeless sound this is. No SBD creates the live music sound, feel, and sensation of being there better than a decent sounding AUD. Dark Star -- holy-crap! Ditto for Bird Song, Here Comes Sunshine, PITB, Eyes, Stella Blue, Looks Like Rain and so much more. The boys played pretty decently. A good time was had by all.

My AUD recording epitomizes the very best of the Grateful Dead "live sound" for the time. The Wall of Sound is nailed by the sound crew and the Dead for this show. Set within an outdoor Stadium, this close-up infield FOB spatially captures sound from the two Aux PA towers on the infield, behind the taper. The sound delay from the Wall of Sound to the Aux PA towers adds a touch of ear candy as it rolls around the stadium. This was by far the best sound fidelity experience I ever heard come out of a PA System, period. It was a sensational orgy of sound. At 5-feet and 8-inches tall, my arm was raised up the entire show. I was holding up my mic on the upper half of a standard mic stand shaft.

I'm trying to get this brand new AUD put up here on the Live Music Archive. Hey Matt Vernon, can I have an FTP address to ftp my Flacs to you? Hey Etree, can I have an FTP address to ftp my Flacs to you? imho, this AUD should be transferred to etree and LMA, and be made undeletable forever. In the meantime, I put up my Flacs on Media Fire free personal file hosting. 100 MB is the file size limit there. I had to break up the Dark Star flac for that. VBR_MP3s are also here. Be my guest...

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: this GD show goes around and comes around

--- Goes around - Comes around ---

Kevin Tobin's new composite AUD finally made it here. He did a fantastic clean-up job on my AUD gd73-06-10. I was the taper 35 years ago. Recently I transferred my tapes to my computer. I 1st uploaded my fileset to Media Fire on Feb 27. Many people including myself love this show. The sound system was the best I ever heard. It's clearly one of the most loved shows of all time. Why should we wait for Matt Vernon to get his hands on this show? He's busy. Who knows if it will ever make it onto the GD section at the archive? There's only the Gadsden partial AUD. What if dealing with torrents at bt-etree is not your thing? What if you want to listen to this GD show streaming here on the LMA? What if you want to put VBRs on your i-pod? This AUD isn't there. I think I figured it out. Flacs and other filesets are ready. All downloadable and streamable.

Steve Swartz first picked up my fileset from Media Fire. That's how the torrent got going. Kevin got his hands on my fileset and remastered it. He also made a new SBD and a Matrix - surround sound. I picked up his filesets when I jumped on the torrents last week over at etree. Now I'm putting "our AUD fileset" up at Archive-dot-org. Not located in the Grateful Dead section. Not in the Live Music Archive. It's in their Our Media collection. I wonder where this fileset is going next. Matt Vernon's computer, perhaps? Go figure. Goes around - comes around.

gd73-06-10-AUD-barry-gadsden-tobin-flac

I wanted to show the Our Media collection to you deadheads. Very interesting. If you have a hot AUD, and you can't get it on GD section here at LMA (Matt Vernon), and you can't get it on MOTB -- or anywhere else for that matter -- other than Media Fire, or creating your own torrent and putting it on bt-etree ---- here's a place you might try. Our Media collection at Archive dot org. It's attractive for the archivists like myself. I taped lots of live music betweeen 1973 - 1983. Right now there are a few glitches at Archive dot org. ZIPs and streaming files for my u/l did not derive. I'm hopeful the Archive dot org techs will get this sorted out. But you should at least be able to see the example I created. Just trying to keep the music going, and open your minds. I'm thinking I can put my AUD gd73-06-09 - the RFK Stadium Satuday show - in my collection at Our Media. Then you'll have the complete RFK Stadium "show" -- the June 9 / 10 box set, side by side. Sunday show may have been an all time great show. But this incredible venue with the Allman Brothers began on Saturday. It just kept getting better and better all weekend! -- Monte

Monte - I've been trying to download the show but can't get more than the first three songs. I've tried using DownThemAll and tried each one individually but come up against a 'server error' every time. Is it me or is there something amiss?

no -- it's me! this d/l source is gone. All the new 6-10 shows just made it to the GD section here on the LMA - just the other day. New composite AUD, new SBD, new Matrix available in surround sound. So I blew away the redundant fileset on the Archive servers. sorry for the run-around. but - that was the idea - or the theme of this post. thanks for asking rob.

I was just listening to this recording and want to thank you for all the hard work. This really sounds nice! Thanks to all the folks who worked to get this out. It has a really cool ambience with the echo from the towers and is a fine recording. Right on Monte! Do you have 6/9/73 and the ABB sets too?

Dan, I appreciate that. Thanks. I wimped out and ran outta gas on the 5-yard line. Sorry. Yes, I have all of GD 73-06-09 AUD from the 1st show on Saturday. But, no ABB. Duane was dead almost 18 months before, and I didn't bother recording them.

Maybe I should put that out too. Really, RFK Stadium - June 73 was a weekend phenomena. Maybe Steve and Arb can get back to me on that SBE fumble. Sure would be nice to FTP my flacs next time.

my webpage for tomorrow uses 2 graphics which I have the HTML resizing down, to fit the page nice. some browsers, like Internet Exploder, don't render the result anti-aliased. so I took a moment to do it in Photoshop. My webpage should look perfect in any browser. I'm throwing in Pigpen's finest pic...

I hope you decide to put out 6/9/73 as well! I am really liking this 6/10/73 recording...it has that X Factor to it. This is one fine sounding audience recording. If you get around to doing 6/9/73 let us know. I would love to hear it. Is it an FOB also?

honestly, my unsophisticated brief searches for the term FOB never yielded it's meaning. "up-front" is the meaning I'm using it for. I hope that's accurate. my 6-09 taping is in the same infield area as 6-10. Wall of Sound is the same magic as 6-10. mind-blower.

I've downloaded all your music. You didn't offer up a fingerprint file, so I'm taking it that a successful download worked. I've checked the internal fingerprints against the wavs, which gives me confidence that I got your music.

Each of your tracks had a SBE. So, I'm going to register to SHNIDs. One will be for the sources you've shared here (I'll create a set of fingerprints etc for this). Then I'll fix the SBEs and combine the Dark Star back into one track, and create a second source with those fixes. I'll upload both to the LMA, and share the second sourc with the fixes on eTree.

Is that ok? If not, please either respond on this track or via email.

Thanks so much Steve. I don't know what an SBE is, or how I "created" one. Sorry. Arb said the same thing to me. (In my Ampex days, SBE would have meant Society of Broadcast Engineers.) I'm totally new to Samplitude. I'm using an older version 7. warez is warez. There's no profit here. If there was, I'd buy it. I did buy CD tag, decent headphones, and a used Lexicon Alpha. And again, I have cold feet about using bt. It's not in my comfort zone yet. I'm new to this whole scene.

I hope you and Arbuthnot are not doing the exact same major effort "twice" on taking this show into the "end zone." That would embarrass me. I hope my dual-filesets didn 't confuse you guys. For the flacs, after you re-combine Dark Star, remember to rename the track numbers for He's Gone, Wharf Rat, and Truckin' files.

I wish I could have just FTP'd these in. Didn't want to be a hassle or look wimpy. Doesn't matter. Kick back, chill a bit, and then put this show on your player. Headphones for this will blow you away. I'm still freaking out over this sound 35 years later.

I also attached info dot txt and md5 here.
